OZEV Grant & Workplace Charging Scheme Explained
When researching EV chargers, it is common to encounter a range of acronyms such as OZEV, EVCPG, and WCS. Understanding what these mean and how they apply to you or your clients is key to making the most of available financial support.
This guide outlines:
- What OZEV, EVCPG, and WCS stand for
- Who can apply
- Which vehicles and chargers are eligible
- How to apply for support
What is the OZEV Grant?
The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV), a government team within the Department for Transport (DfT) and Department for Business and Trade (DBT), manages UK grant schemes to support the uptake of electric vehicles. Two key programmes are:
- EV Chargepoint Grant (EVCPG); for residential intallation
- Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS); for commercial and fleet users
Both schemes offer a contribution of up to £350 per chargepoint, subject to eligibility requirements. These initiatives aim to lower the barrier to EV adoption by reducing upfront installation costs. Read on for more info >>
What Replaced the EVHS Scheme?
The former Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) ended on 1 April 2022. It has been replaced by the EV Chargepoint Grant, now focused on homeowners in flats and renters.
OZEV Reliability Requirements
To qualify for OZEV support, applicants must meet the following conditions:
- Purchase an OZEV-approved smart charger
- Use an OZEV-approved smart charger
- Have private, off-street parking at the property or premises
- Own, lease, or have ordered a qualifying EV or PHEV for minimum of 6 months
You can find a list of eligible EVs on the GOV.uk website.
EV Chargepoint Grant for Domestic Use
The Workplace Charging Scheme offers UK businesses, charities, and public sector organisations financial support to install EV chargepoints at their premises. It covers up to 75% of the total installation cost, capped at £350 per socket, for a maximum of 40 sockets per applicant (up to £14,000 total); and applicants must have access to private off-street parking.
The scheme uses a voucher-based system to make the application process straightforward and is ideal for fleet operators, workplace charging for employees, and visitor car parks. Read more on WCS here >>

The EV Chargepoint Grant replaces the previous Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) and provides a government-funded contribution to support home EV charger installations for people who rent or live in flats. It helps make home charging more accessible to drivers who do not live in detached homes or own driveways.
Who Can Apply?
This grant is open to:
- Homeowners living in flats
- Tenants living in flats or single-use rental properties
Applicants must:
- Own, lease, or have ordered a qualifying electric vehicle
- Have access to private, off-street parking
- Not already have claimed a grant for a second EV charger at the same property
What’s Covered?
The scheme covers 75% of the cost of purchasing and installing one OZEV-approved smart chargepoint, capped at £350 (including VAT) per installation.
Key Requirements and Changes from EVHS
The main updates from the former EVHS scheme include:
- The grant is only available to renters or flat owner-occupiers
- Customers are no longer eligible to claim for two chargepoints at the same property
- Installers must confirm property ownership or, for rentals, verify the name and address of the letting party as stated on the tenancy agreement
The same list of approved chargepoints and eligible vehicles used under the EVHS still applies to this grant.
How the Grant Process Works
- Customer selects an OZEV-approved installer and confirms eligibility
- Installer carries out the installation and applies for the grant on the customer’s behalf
- Customer is invoiced the total cost minus the grant amount
- Installer receives the grant funds from OZEV if the application is approved
OZEV aims to process valid claims from experienced installers within 30 working days.
Once the online application service becomes fully digital, all grant applications will be made through the central portal to avoid duplication.
Important Notes:
- The government may update or close the grant at any time and typically provides four weeks’ notice
- Claims submitted before a cut-off announcement will be honoured, provided they meet the eligibility criteria

The EV Infrastructure Grant helps landlords, housing provides and ogranisations that manage multi-unit residential properties to install essential EV charging infrastructure in their car parks. This includes funding for both chargepoints and the foundational infrastructure that supports future installations.
The scheme is administered by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) on behalf of the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV).
What the Grant Covers
This grant supports the upfront costs of installing cabling and infrastructure for multiple EV chargepoints, even if not all chargepoints are installed immediately. This allows landlords to future-proof their properties, ensuring they are ready to meet growing demand from tenants.
Please note: This grant is separate from the EV Chargepoint Grant for Landlords, which only covers the installation of individual chargepoints, not the infrastructure. Both grants can be used at the same property, but not for the same chargepoints.
How the Grant Works
To use the grant, follow these steps:
- Register with DVLA using the official EV Infrastructure Grant form.
- Choose an OZEV-approved installer and agree on the planned work.
- Once work is complete, the installer submits the grant claim on your behalf.
- The installer provides documentation including the final invoice, installation photos, and a car park layout diagram.
- DVLA reviews the application and notifies the installer of the result.
- If successful, OZEV pays the grant to the installer, and the discount is passed on to you.
Who Can Apply?
You may be eligible if you are a:
- Landlord renting or leasing residential property
- Right to manage (RTM) company
- Residents' management company (RMC)
- Company owning freehold or managing common areas
- Registered property factor
- Private registered provider of social housing (PRP)
- Housing association
- Charity or public authority
Applicants must manage a residential property in England, Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland (excludes Channel Islands and Isle of Man).
Eligible Properties
Properties must:
- Be multi-unit residential sites, such as apartment blocks or estates
- Include a shared car park with at least five clearly marked parking spaces
- Support the installation of chargepoints or the infrastructure for future expansion
Important Considerations
- The grant may be withdrawn or amended at any time. OZEV will aim to provide four weeks’ notice before any changes.
- Claims submitted before a change will be honoured as long as all eligibility criteria are met.

The UK government offers support to help small and medium-sized businesses install EV charging infrastructure at their workplaces. The scheme is administered by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) on behalf of the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV).
This grant helps with both installing EV chargepoints and the supporting infrastructure, including wiring and groundwork, to prepare additional parking bays for future chargepoint installations.
Who Can Apply?
This grant is available to small and medium-sized businesses that:
- Are registered at Companies House or VAT registered with HMRC
- Have fewer than 250 employees
- Have received less than €200,000 (approx. £170,00) in public support in the past 3 financial years (de minimis state aid limit)
The business must own, lease or rent the site where the installation will take place and satisfy all OZEV eligibility requirements.
What the Grant Covers
The grant supports two aspects of installation:
- Infrastructure costs: Up to £500 per parking space that will be provisioned for a future or current chargepoint socket
- Chargepoint costs: Up to £350 per socket, in addition to the infrastructure allowance
Each application can claim up to £15,000 in total, based on a minimum of five parking spaces being provisioned for charging, with at least one operational chargepoint. Read on for more information here >>
How the Grant Works
| 1. | Register your business with DVLA using the official application form |
|---|---|
| 2. | Agree on work with an OZEV-approved installer at your selected site |
| 3. |
The installer completes the installation and submits the grant claim with supporting evidence including:
|
| 4. | DVLA processes the claim and notifies the installer |
| 5. | If approved, OZEV pays the grant directly to the installer, who must pass the discount onto your final invoice |
Grant Rules and Restrictions
- A business can apply for up to five grants, each for a different site
- Chargepoints must be for staff or fleet use only (not visitors or public access)
- Each site must provision a minimum of five parking spaces, with at least one live charger
- Only one installer can be used per application
- Cross-subsidising costs across sites or inflating installation prices is not permitted. Violations may result in removal from the scheme
If additional chargepoints are required, businesses may also consider using the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) alongside this grant.

Workplace Charging Scheme
The Workplace Charging Scheme is a government-backed voucher initiative that helps reduce the upfront cost of purchasing and installing EV chargepoints at commercial, charity, or public sector premises. It’s ideal for organisations looking to support staff or fleet EV use.
How the Scheme Works
The WCS offers:
- Up to 75% of the total cost of purchase and installation (including VAT)
- A maximum of £350 per chargepoint socket
- Up to 40 sockets across all sites per applicant
To apply, eligible organisations must complete the online application form. If successful, they will receive a unique voucher code via email.
This voucher is given to an OZEV-authorised installer, who will carry out the installation. The installer then claims the grant directly from OZEV on your behalf. Installations must be completed and claims submitted within six months of the voucher issue date. Expired vouchers cannot be claimed.
Eligibility
The scheme is open to:
- UK-based businesses of all sizes
- Registered charities
- Public sector bodies (including schools, NHS sites, councils, etc.)
Applicants must:
