Types of Wiring Accessories at Electrical2Go

Plastic Light Switches

Plastic light switches are a popular type of light switch that are lightweight, durable, and affordable. They come in an array of colours such as white, black, and grey, and can be used in a variety of environments such as homes, offices, and public buildings.

There are several main types of plastic light switches available on the market, including:

  • Toggle Switches - These are the most common type of light switch with a simple on/off switch that flips up and down to turn the light on or off.
  • Rocker Switches - These switches are rectangular and have a small lever that slides back and forth to turn the light on or off.
  • Dimmer Switches - These switches allow you to adjust the brightness of your lights by turning a dial or sliding a lever up or down.
  • Timers - These switches are designed to automatically turn lights on and off at specific times of the day, ideal for outdoor lighting and security purposes.
  • Smart Switches – These switches can be controlled remotely using a smartphone app, voice commands, or your home automation system. They often come with advanced features like scheduling, scene setting, and integration with other smart home devices.

Plastic Switch Covers and Plates

Plastic switch covers and plates are an easy and inexpensive way to update and customise the look of your light switches and outlets while providing protection and additional functionality. Available in a variety of styles, colours and finishes to suit different interior themes.

The plastic switch cover is designed to slip over the light switch, not only protecting the light switch from dust and dirt, but also providing a decorative cover.

Plastic plates are used to cover electrical boxes containing wiring for light switches or outlets. They are designed to be flush with a wall or surface and come in a variety of sizes and shapes to match every electrical box.

Some plastic switch covers and plates also come with additional features such as smart technology that allows you to remotely control light switches or sockets via smartphone app or voice commands and integrate with other smart home devices.

Plastic Sockets

Plastic sockets and cover plates are similar to plastic light switches and switch plates but are used to control power to sockets instead of light fixtures. As with light switches, our plastic sockets and cover plates are available in a variety of colours, designs and surfaces to match different furniture themes.

Some plastic sockets are also equipped with additional features such as USB ports, child safety devices and smart technology. USB ports can charge smartphones and other electronic devices without adapters, and child safety features help prevent accidental electric shocks by making it difficult for children to access electrical outlets. Smart technology allows you to remotely control your outlet via smartphone app or voice commands and integrate with other smart home devices. RJ45 Sockets are also available as are Cat5 sockets.

Back Boxes

Electrical back boxes are devices that are installed behind wall or ceiling sockets, light switches, and other electrical fixtures. The purpose of a back box is to provide a secure and safe enclosure for the electrical wiring and connectors that power your device. Electric back boxes come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are usually made of metal or plastic material. Metal boxes are usually made of steel and are stronger and more durable than plastic boxes, while plastic boxes are lighter and easier to handle.

The shape and size of the back box depend on the type of fixture that it is designed to hold. For example, a single-gang back box is used for a single light switch or outlet, and a double-gang back box is used for two switches or outlets side by side. They are also designed with fire resistance in mind, which is important in the event of a short circuit or electrical fire. They usually have a metal frame surrounding the cable connections and are designed to prevent the spread of fire and smoke.

When installing electrical back boxes, it is important to follow local building codes and safety guidelines and use the correct type and size of box for the equipment being installed. Proper installation of back boxes is essential for safe and reliable operation of electrical installations in homes and buildings.

Plastic Dimmer Switches

A plastic dimmer switch works by regulating the voltage flowing through the light fixture. Reducing the voltage reduces the light output and makes the light dimmer. This switch has a rotary or slider control that allows the user to adjust the voltage and adjust the brightness of the light.

Plastic dimmer switches are widely used but have some limitations. They are not suitable for all types of bulbs, such as some types of LED bulbs. They also require special wiring and may not be compatible with all electrical systems. It can also generate heat that requires additional ventilation and cooling measures.

Plastic Fused Connection Units or FCUs

The purpose of a fused connection unit is to isolate power to a specific appliance or appliances while protecting against overloads and short circuits. The unit consists of a switch, fuse and socket, all in a single housing.

The purpose of a fused connection unit is to isolate power to a specific appliance or appliances while protecting against overloads and short circuits. The unit consists of a switch, fuse and socket, all in a single housing.

When installing an FCU, it is important to ensure that it is properly grounded, and that wiring is installed according to the manufacturer's instructions and local electrical codes. Regular inspection and maintenance of the FCU is also recommended to ensure safe and reliable operation.

Plastic Media Connectors and Shaver Plugs

Media connectors, also known as AV connectors, are electrical connectors for audio and video connections. They are typically used to connect devices such as TVs, DVD players, and game consoles to each other or to other audio and video equipment. Media connectors come in many shapes and sizes, including RCA, HDMI, and VGA connectors.

A shaver plug, on the other hand, is an electrical plug used to charge electric shavers and other personal care devices. They feature a small two-prong configuration and are commonly used in bathrooms and other areas where water is present. Shaver plugs are typically rated for lower voltage and amperage than other types of electrical plugs and often have additional safety features such as fuses and circuit breakers to prevent electrical shock.

Benefits of Plastic Electrical Switches and Plates

Frequently Asked Home Wiring Accessory Questions

What is a 2-way light switch?

A two-way light switch is a type of electrical switch used to control one light fixture from two different locations. Also called a single pole, double throw (SPDT) switch.

How to move a light switch

Moving a light switch requires rewiring the switch to a new location. This can be done by following these general steps:

  1. Turn off the power to the circuit breaker or fuse box switch before doing any electrical wiring work.
  2. Use a screwdriver to remove the screw that secures the switch to the control box. Carefully pull the switch out of its box and disconnect the cable from the switch.
  3. Decide where you want to move the switch to and mark the new position on the wall.
  4. Run new electrical wiring from the original switch box to the new switch position. This usually requires drilling a hole in the wall or ceiling and running the wires through it.
  5. Install the new switch box in the new location and connect the wires to the new switch. Connect the cables using the cable connectors, matching the colours of the cables to the corresponding terminals on the switch.
  6. Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker or fuse box and test the new switch to make sure it works.

It is important to note that electrical work can be dangerous and should be performed by a licensed electrician or a qualified homebuilder with experience in electrical work. Before attempting to move a light switch, make sure you have the proper tools, knowledge, and safety equipment to complete the job safely and effectively.

Can you have a light switch in a bathroom?

Yes, you can install light switches in your bathroom. In fact, all bathrooms in the UK are legally required to have light switches or other means of light control.

The wiring and installation of light switches in UK bathrooms is governed by the IET Wiring regulations, 18th Edition (BS 7671:2018). Light switches should be installed at a safe distance from water sources to avoid electric shock hazards from splashing water. Wiring should also be protected by a Residual Current Device (RCD) or other suitable protective device to provide additional protection against electric shock.

It is important to hire a qualified and registered electrician to install or repair electrical wiring or components in your bathroom to ensure the work is done safely and to specification. To learn more about installing electrical products in your bathroom and outside, read our IP Ratings Guide!
