Outdoor lighting refers to any type of lighting that is used outside of a building, such as in a garden, on a patio, or along a driveway. Outdoor lighting can serve a variety of purposes, including providing security, improving visibility, adding decorative touches, and creating a welcoming atmosphere. There are many different types of outdoor lights available, including floodlights, path lights, solar lights, wall lights, and string lights. When choosing outdoor lighting, it's important to consider the location, the purpose of the light, energy efficiency, and cost.

Types of Outdoor Lighting

Bollard Lighting

Bollard lights are short, sturdy posts that are often used to define walkways or provide low-level lighting, while brick lights are embedded in the wall and provide a subtle, decorative touch. Garden lanterns add a traditional touch to your outdoor space and can be placed on tables or hung from trees. Garden spike lights can be used to highlight specific features in your garden, while garden wall lights are mounted on walls and provide both lighting and decoration. Ground, deck, and recessed lights are used to provide lighting without taking up much space, and security lights are specifically designed to deter burglars and provide additional safety.

Brick Wall Lights

Brick lights are a type of outdoor lighting that are embedded in a wall and provide a subtle, decorative touch. They are often used to highlight the edges of a path, steps, or other features in a garden or outdoor space. Brick lights are typically low-level and provide a soft, diffused light that helps to create a welcoming atmosphere. They are available in a range of styles and sizes to suit different design preferences.

Garden Lanterns

Garden lanterns are a type of outdoor lighting that adds a traditional touch to your outdoor space. They can be placed on tables or hung from trees and come in a range of styles and materials, such as metal, glass, or plastic. Garden lanterns can be used to provide general lighting or to highlight specific features in your garden. They are often used in conjunction with other types of outdoor lights to create a cohesive lighting scheme. Garden lanterns can be powered by electricity or run on batteries, making them a convenient and flexible lighting option.

Garden Spike Lights

Garden spike lights are a type of outdoor lighting that are mounted on spikes and used to highlight specific features in your garden, such as trees, plants, or statues. They are often used in conjunction with other types of outdoor lights to create a cohesive lighting scheme. Garden spike lights are available in a range of styles and sizes to suit different design preferences. They are typically low-level and provide a soft, diffused light that helps to create a welcoming atmosphere. Garden spike lights can be powered by electricity or run on batteries, making them a convenient and flexible lighting option.

Garden Wall Lights

Garden wall mounted lights are a type of outdoor lighting fixture that are designed to be mounted on the walls of your home or garden. These lights are a great way to add both decorative and functional lighting to your outdoor space. They can be used to highlight key features of your garden, such as trees, plants, or architectural details, and also provide illumination for outdoor activities or as a security measure.

Recessed Lighting or Ground/Deck Lighting

Recessed or ground lights are a type of outdoor lighting fixture that are designed to be installed in the ground or in a recessed area. These lights are a great way to add subtle, low-level lighting to your outdoor space. They are often used to highlight pathways, walkways, or other areas of the garden, and can provide a soft, ambient glow that is perfect for creating a cosy atmosphere. Recessed or ground lights are also an excellent choice for illuminating outdoor features such as trees, plants, or water features.

Security Lights & Flood Lights

Security or flood lights are a type of outdoor lighting fixture that are designed to provide bright, wide-angle illumination for added security and safety. These lights are often mounted on the exterior of a home or business, and can be activated by motion sensors or manual switches. Flood lights are a great way to deter potential burglars or intruders, and can also provide additional lighting for outdoor activities or events. They are available in a range of styles and finishes, so you can choose the look that best matches your outdoor décor. Some options even have features such as adjustable brightness or timer settings for added convenience. Whether you want to increase the security of your home or business, or simply need additional lighting for outdoor activities, security or flood lights are a practical and effective choice.

Factors to Consider with Outdoor Lighting Purchases:

  • Purpose: Do you want to provide security, add decorative touches, or improve visibility? Different types of lights serve different purposes.

  • Location: Will the light be exposed to the elements? Make sure to choose a light that is rated for outdoor use and can withstand rain, snow, and other weather conditions.

  • Energy Efficiency: LED lights are a good choice for outdoor lighting because they use less energy and last longer than traditional incandescent bulbs.

  • Cost: Consider your budget and choose a light that fits your price range.

As for the best lighting for driveways, you may want to consider using floodlights or path lights to provide visibility and help prevent accidents.

It is generally recommended to hire an electrician to install outdoor lights, especially if you are not familiar with electrical work. An electrician will be able to properly install the light and ensure that it is safe and up to code.

Frequently Asked Outdoor Lighting Questions

How do you illuminate a dark driveway?

There are a few options for illuminating a dark driveway:

  • Floodlights: These are a good choice for illuminating a large area, such as a driveway. You can mount floodlights on the side of your house or on poles along the edge of the driveway.

  • Path Lights: These are smaller lights that can be placed along the sides of the driveway to provide visibility and add decorative touches.

  • Solar Lights: These use energy from the sun to power the lights, making them a convenient and eco-friendly option.

In terms of lumens, it's difficult to give a specific number as it will depend on the size of your driveway and how much light you want to provide. As a general rule of thumb, you'll want at least 100 lumens per square foot for general lighting and up to 300 lumens per square foot for task lighting.

As for colour, some studies have shown that bug-repellent LED lights with a yellow or orange colour temperature are less attractive to insects. However, keep in mind that these lights may not provide as much visibility as brighter white or daylight LED lights.

What is an LED light?

Compared to a standard bulb or halogen lights, LED lights are smaller, consume less energy, more durable and reliable, brighter and do not contain harmful toxins or emit dangerous UV rays.

What do the different colour temperatures mean?

With so many colours to choose from, and each offering a different type of atmosphere it can be difficult to make a decision for your home project. Here is just a quick overview of the different colour temperatures:

Extra Warm White (2200K) – This LED is usually used where there is already another light source, most commonly found in outdoor areas such as fireplaces.

Warm White (2700K) – This LED emits a friendly and warm atmosphere, commonly used in outdoor home spaces such as doorways or outdoor spaces. This creates a relaxing vibe to unwind in.

Warm White (3000K +) – This colour temperature is much cooler than the previous 2 and is most often used in gardens to light up trees or sculptures, or to help make something stand out.

Cool White (4000K +) Lights in the 4000K range are a lot brighter and have a blue tint to them. The colour is best described as imitating moonlight, making them perfect for gardens.

Daylight (4500K +) These lights are to simulate daytime sunlight. The brightest in colour temperatures before blue light starts to appear!

What do the different IP ratings mean?

The IP code stands for Ingress Protection and is a measurement of how resistant a product is to dust and water. IP20 rating means it's touch proof and IP44 means it's resistant to just water and dust. Anything above IP44 can be used in zones 1 and 2 of a bathroom. IP65 rating is the highest level of protection and most electricians prefer installing downlights for instance with this rating for added protection.

What are the benefits of using outdoor lighting?

Outdoor lighting can provide a number of benefits, including enhancing the appearance and safety of your outdoor spaces. Outside lights and outdoor light fixtures can add ambiance and character to your garden, patio, or balcony, while outdoor LED lighting can provide bright, energy-efficient illumination. Outdoor garden lights and outdoor LED lights can help to highlight the natural beauty of your outdoor spaces, while outdoor house lights can improve the curb appeal of your home. Outdoor lighting can also increase security and convenience by illuminating pathways, entrances, and other areas of your home.

What is feature lighting?

Feature lighting is a strategy which creates interest in a specific feature in a garden, such as trees, statues, or structures. This adds a focal point to an outdoor space and adds depth to the garden. There are many different techniques of feature lighting such as spotlighting, cross lighting, shadowing, and silhouetting.

Cross Lighting:  Using multiple lights to create a softer shadow around an outside garden object. This exposes greater detail.

Spotlighting:  Involves the use of intense and bright lights near the bottom of statues, trees and other garden objects to create a focal point.

Shadowing:  Involves putting a light in front of something, and then filtering the light to create a dramatic shadow on the wall or backdrop.

Silhouetting:  The opposite of shadowing. Instead of positioning the lights in front of an object, place them behind to create a dramatic silhouette.

We've put together a range including exquisite outside lanterns, spike-and-spot outdoor lighting, elegant lamp posts for your garden, ground, deck and wall lights, bollard lights, security lights, surface lighting and wall lighting.
