What is a downlight?
A downlight is a light fitting, that luminates in a downwards direction to light the area below it. Most commonly, they are recessed into the ceiling, so they are discreet and small.
Why use a downlight?
They are versatile, small and discreet and perfect for a variety of uses throught a home or any other location. Aside from their practicality, they vastly improve the interior appearance, and are a useful way of highlighting parts around the home, like a painting or kitchen island.
What is a beam angle and which should I choose?
The beam angle is the measurement of how a luminaire's light is distributed.
Choosing the correct beam angle is important for the type of lighting you want. Generally, a beam angle of 36 degrees will work well in any space, and is the most commonly used beam angle in homes. If you want a more intense light, then a 15 degree or 25 degree downlight is your choice. If you are looking for a downlight in your office or home, then 36/40 degree downlights are your best bet, creating a more softer, gentle light. Finally, 120 degree lights are useful for basic lighting in any room
Which downlights are best for a bathroom?
We recommend installing IP rated downlights as standard, due to the steam and moisture that may damage the lights. If fitting the downlight above a shower cubile, then the minimum IP rating you should fit is an IP44 downlight. Some of our favourite IP44 rated downlights are the Aurora Baffled LED downlight, the Ansell Comfort 3000K downlight and the Greenbrook Vela Compact LED downlight.
